Healthier Active Communities-Big Lottery Funded joint project-

Health First Team and the Great Homer Street Medical centre

Introduction to our work

Health First Team (HFT) aims to help people living in Liverpool make better and informed choices about health, wellness and fitness. We will achieve this by providing education, training and coaching about the benefits of good nutrition and exercise which meet the identified needs of our beneficiaries.

We will be working with the Great Homer Street Medical Centre (presently housed at the Mere Lane Neighbourhood Health Centre) who is our partner in supporting this bid. We have identified the potential beneficiaries by using the following criteria:

  1. People with depression aged between 18-55 with a BMI of > 32
  2. People with depression aged between 55-85 with a BMI of> 32

We have established a total pool of 480 females and males who meet with the above criteria. Our project will be delivered in the communities where the beneficiaries live. Our target groups identified proximity to their home environment as a key motivating factor for participation in community based health education and physical activity sessions. As a result of this we will deliver our health and wellbeing programs within accessible venues to reduce these barriers. We intend to offer all our beneficiaries a menu of options for health an wellbeing activities aimed to increase physical activity and reduce social isolation which will include:

1)    Walking trips to the Lake District, Delamere Forest and other green spaces

2)    Cycling trips making use of the City bikes(working with Dan Robinson of Peloton)

3)    6 week health and wellbeing programs which will include physical activity, nutrition education and mindfulness approaches to (being and staying) well which will our beneficiaries to achieve balance and promote a healthy awareness of self.(see below for additional)

4)    Mindfulness classes

5)    Weekly, Pilates, Yoga and aerobic sessions

Our programs are personalised and tailored to suit the needs of our beneficiaries. We achieve this by ensuring that our health and wellbeing programs suit the pace and progression of each beneficiary. In addition all of our beneficiaries will receive a free wellness evaluation at the start of our health and wellbeing programs. We use a Tanita body composition scan this provides accurate information on key health indicators such as body fat percentage, total water percentage, visceral fat levels, etc, which enables us to accurately monitor the impact of changes in the lifestyle of our beneficiaries.

Our 6 week Healthier Lifestyle Challenge (HLC) is designed to give participants the necessary knowledge and support to help them achieve better health and well-being as well as safe and long term weight loss provided that weight loss is their personal goal. Over the 6 week period Health First Team (HFT) will educate all the participants on key topics which include Cholesterol, Alcohol, Sugar, Salt and Saturated fats. We will engage the group in regular physical activity which will include walking, cycling, jogging, cardiovascular and aerobic exercise which is underpinned by nutrition education and the benefits of healthy eating.

HFT recognises the link between inequality and health therefore we will work with deprived communities to deliver wider social, environmental and economic benefits. It is our intention to maximise the impact of public funding by taking account of wider community benefits such as the development of employment, training and entrepreneurial skills. We intend to work with 10 volunteers over the life of our project and we are keen to ensure that we help them to develop skills to increase there employability. Health First Team is registered with the Volunteer Centre Liverpool, and we will draw our volunteers from this organisation.

We aim to reduce social isolation by providing vulnerable groups with opportunities to become healthier by exercising and improving their diets. We know from our research that socially isolated groups face critical and debilitating barriers in attending such sessions as they receive little or no support in accessing activities in safe and inclusive environments. By meeting service users on a community level we believe that we can combat such problems by developing strong social relationships and opportunities to influence positive behaviour change. We believe that the knowledge, skills and confidence that our participants will gain during our health and wellbeing will embed enduring positive lifestyle changes and reduce social isolation
